Diagrid Structures

Diagrid  structures are constructed by attaching diagonal members. It can be constructed from steel, wood, concrete or other materials. Nowadays, diagrid frames are commonly used in the construction of skyscrapers and tall buildings.

Steel diagrid

One of the most popular materials to build the diagrid system is steel. Circular and rectangular steel sections are more convenient to be attached for constructing diagrids. The design of a steel diagrid can be carried out by numerical software such as abaqus.

Concrete diagrid

Cast-in-place and prefabricated concrete elements are another useful materials for erecting a diagrid. However, prefabricated members are easier and faster to be installed. The main advantage of concrete structure is their high resistance against fire.

Wooden diagrid

The only advantages of a wooden diagrid is its authenticity for decorative purposes. The wooden parts must be protected against erosion and weathering by some sort of resin. Otherwise the lifespan of the structure will be short.

Advantage of diagrid structures

No one can deny the beauty of a diagrid structure. they are highly eye-catching for shopping malls and other commercial centers that is a positive feature to prospering the businesses. Moreover using diagrid, can cause a 20 percent reduction in steel usage. It allows the occupants to use the maximum amounts of natural light. Since no column is needed to support them, diagrid structures are spacious and desirable.

Drawbacks

Lack of sufficient technical source is the main reason for which the construction of these structures has been not developed.  Additionally, the installation process needs a specialized team that may cost more than erection of usual structures.
